What Collectors Really Want. Hint: It's Not Just Your Art

Updated: 2 days ago

I was thinking about something close to my heart lately: Connecting with those who love our art -- our collectors.

It's so much more than just a sale, isn't it? It's about building these real, warm connections that last. And honestly, it's one of the most rewarding parts of this whole artistic journey.

Here are my tips on how we can really connect with our collectors on a deeper level. Because let's face it, they're not just buying a piece of art; they're buying a piece of us.

What's really in a collector's heart?

When someone buys our art, they're looking for more than just something pretty to hang on their wall. They're looking for that spark, that feeling, something that adds a little magic to their lives.

  • That "wow" moment: They want art that changes how they see things, that starts conversations, that adds depth and meaning.

  • The feels: They're drawn to art that touches their emotions, that brings back memories, that makes them feel something real.

  • Something truly theirs: They want to own something unique, a piece of beauty and creativity that's all their own.

Where do they find us?

These days, it's a mix of online and real-world encounters.

  • Scrolling and clicking: They're on Instagram, exploring Artsy, and visiting websites (yours!). More and more, they're buying art online.

  • Face to face. There's still something special about seeing art in person, in galleries, shows and fairs.

How do we connect?

We need to meet them where they are!

  • Make your online home welcoming:

    • A beautiful website with your story and your art, and an easy way to buy (an online storefront), is a must.

    • Keep your social media alive and kicking, sharing your art and the stories behind it.

    • Don't be shy about posting your work often, and tell the story of each piece. People buy from people they connect with.

  • Be up front about prices:

    • Collectors appreciate clear pricing. Don't hide it!

    • Offer pieces at different price points, so everyone can find something they love.

  • Be a good communicator:

    • Answer questions quickly and kindly.

    • Give them all the info they need about fees, shipping, and delivery.

    • Send professional invoices and delivery timelines.

  • Make it personal:

    • Invite them to your studio.

    • Give virtual studio tours for those who can't come in person.

    • Host in person or online open house and sales direct from your studio.

Keep the connection going!

The sale is just the beginning.

  • Make shipping & delivery a dream: Ship carefully, insure, and track. I use professional shippers for large art. If they're local, offer to hand-deliver and install.

  • Package with love: Wrap it up beautifully, include a personal note, a certificate of authenticity, and maybe a little something extra for your best collectors (I tuck in a mini abstract!).

  • Stay in touch: Follow up to make sure everything arrives perfectly and looks great. Ask for installation photos and share them (with their permission, of course!).

  • Keep them inspired:

    • Send out regular (monthly or weekly) newsletters with updates on your work.

    • Invite them to shows and events.

    • Build a community by sending holiday greetings, small gifts (think hand-painted bookmark), and personal invites.

  • Welcome new collectors:

    • Offer affordable pieces to bring in new collectors. They'll grow with you! Mini abstracts on cradled wood and matted abstracts on paper are my two entry level options.

The heart of it all

It's all about knowing your collectors, appreciating them, and building real relationships. If you take away one thing, it’s this --  Sharing your art and story = deep, lasting connections.

Let's connect,

Beverly Todd
