The B List: The Humble Hardware Store Brush

ree

Today's featured item: The simple hardware store brush. I have a dozen of these unassuming heroes in my studio. I usually opt for the softest 3-inch brushes I can find.

I use them exclusively for applying gesso to my canvases with wide, sweeping strokes. I love how they lay down a thick, textured layer – it is very first layer of storytelling in my paintings.

But their usefulness doesn't stop there! They are great for applying final varnish coats. The soft bristles allow the self-leveling varnish to flow smoothly, and applying two coats in the direction of the brushstrokes creates a beautiful, even finish.

These brushes are essential for both the beginning and the end of my painting process. And they even come in handy in the middle, especially when I'm working big and loose, with my canvas on the floor and the brush taped to a long stick for extended reach. Don't underestimate the power of these affordable workhorses!
