Should I jump in to the round of summer art shows & fairs?
Art fairs offer direct engagement and sales but demand considerable time and financial investment with no guaranteed return. Carefully budget and weigh the time commitment against potential benefits before participating. Consider your goals and resources.
Here’s a list of pros and cons to carefully consider.
Pros:
Direct sales & revenue: You’re in the driver’s seat.
Networking with artists & buyers: Rich connections.
Reputation & visibility boost: Make a strong showing & build your rep.
Direct audience feedback: One-on-one connection with collectors.
Mailing list & online growth: Collect contact for future sales.
Cons:
Financial cost: Booth fees, materials, transport. Calculate your break-even.
Time investment: Application, to show days, to follow-up. Value your time.
Uncertainty of sales: What’s the record of attendance & sales (check past years & talk to participants). Bad weather can sink sales dramatically.
Physical demands: Box. Haul. Set Up. Stand Up. Talk, talk, talk. Tear Down. Unpack.
Is your work art-show worthy – Is it the right collection, style, & price point?
