Art Biz 101: Inventory Numbers

What goes on the back of your finished art – the date or an inventory number?
A date clearly marks the moment of the artwork's inception. However, a date can inadvertently introduce assumptions. An older date on a piece that hasn't sold can lead viewers to wonder why.
This is where an inventory number shines. By adopting a system like "BT2503P3" (Beverly Todd, 2025, March, Painting, 3th of that year), you create a clear, internal tracking system without attaching a potentially judgmental timeline to the artwork. This number serves as your unique identifier for inventory, sales records, and certificates of authenticity.
While the choice is yours, inventory numbers offer valuable neutrality.
P.S. I also title, sign, and copyright stamp every piece of art.
