Service Description

AbD (Abstract by Design) is the process of applying paint and paper simultaneously. Learn and use the AbD method on a set of 12 panels to create suites of (3) diptychs or (2) triptychs. Work on cradled panels exploring collage, painting, sanding, color selecting, color mixing, paper selection, mark making, composition, and design to produce mixed media abstractions The focus is on learning the fundamental Abstraction by Design (AbD) techniques of layering paper and paint, reacting, and repeating, and applying this method to panels. You will design and create a suite of complimentary abstractions. The first three days are spent learning and creating. The fourth day, your art will be hung on the studio walls, and you'll take part in a gallery walk and discussion. Registration includes: - Supplies: black house paint, white house paint, and poly-acrylic varnish - Lunch and refreshments Michael Shemchuk www.mshem.com Michael “Shem” Shemchuk is an abstract artist living and working in Northern California. Born in the blue-collar mill town of Lowell, MA, Shem realized early that his keen eye for color and form, burning curiosity, and love of adventure would necessitate a departure from the culturally spare town. Largely self-taught, Shem emerged on the art scene in an unconventional fashion. Influenced by studies at the Academy of Art College and California State University, SF, he combined love for photography, color, and abstraction. Shem practiced the craft of faux finish from the late 1980s until 2000. His work is found in noteworthy homes and buildings in the Bay Area, and he was a color consultant to architects and interior designers in Northern California. In 2000, he resolved to focus on painting and abstraction full time. His work evolved over the last two decades, shaped by a close engagement with material and process. Originally, he used paint and plaster as primary media. Later, he simplified his approach using traditional materials such as paper and paint. In 2017, he further streamlined moving to an organic process involving water, paper, pressure, friction, and time. Shem teaches the principles of Abstraction by Design (AbD) in workshops and private mentoring. His experiences as a teaching artist over the last four years have inspired and deepened his appreciation for creative community and collaboration.
